Key training principles
Rottweilers respond very well to positive reinforcement. Reward desired behaviour with treats, praise or a game. Avoid harsh corrections.
Introduce your Rottweiler to different people, dogs, environments and situations. This produces a confident and friendly adult dog.
Use the same commands and rules throughout the household. Consistency helps your Rottweiler understand what's expected of him.
Training guidelines by age
Puppy (8-16 weeks)
Focus on socialisation, house-training and basic commands like sit, down and stay. Keep sessions short (5-10 minutes) and playful.
Young dog (4-12 months)
Expand commands and work on off-leash behaviour and obedience under distraction. Consider a class at a dog school.
Adult dog
Keep training challenging with new commands, tracking or agility. An adult Rottweiler loves mental challenges.
