Obedience

Obedience training for Rottweilers works best when it is short, frequent and rewarding. Because this is a powerful working breed that can reach 45–60 kg, reliable off-leash recall training and calm loose-leash walking are safety skills first and party tricks second. Most owners see faster progress with two or three five-minute sessions a day than with one long weekend session.

How long does obedience training take?

A young Rottweiler usually learns the mechanics of sit, down, stay and recall within two to four weeks. Making those cues reliable around distractions — other dogs, joggers, food on the pavement — takes three to six months of steady proofing. Adult and rescue Rottweilers can absolutely be trained too; they simply need extra time to unlearn old habits.

Proofing: the step most owners skip

• Change one variable at a time: duration, then distance, then distraction.
• Practise in five different locations before you call a cue "trained".
• Use a long line outdoors until recall is 9 out of 10 reliable.
• Always finish with a release word so your dog never self-releases from a stay.

Group classes, clubs and working titles

Formal Rottweiler obedience classes give you expert eyes and controlled distractions. Working titles such as BH, IGP obedience or rally give structure to a breed that genuinely enjoys having a job. Choose a force-free trainer with experience in large guardian breeds — harsh corrections damage the trust this breed depends on.
