How to Teach a Rottweiler Puppy to Come When Called
Reliable recall is one of the most important skills you can teach a Rottweiler. It improves safety and can eventually give your dog more freedom.
Start Recall Training Indoors
Begin with very little distraction.
- Move a few steps away
- Say your recall cue once
- Encourage your puppy toward you
- Mark the moment they commit to coming
- Reward generously when they reach you
- Release them back to something enjoyable when appropriate
Play the Puppy Recall Game
Two people can sit several feet apart and take turns calling the puppy. Keep it exciting and reward every successful response.
Move Outdoors With a Long Line
A long line allows your puppy to practice at greater distances without giving them uncontrolled freedom.

Do not test recall off leash in an unsecured area before the behavior is genuinely reliable.

- They are almost certain to ignore you
- You are angry
- You plan to punish them
- Coming to you always ends the fun
Sometimes call, reward and release your puppy straight back to play.
Emergency Recall
Consider teaching a separate emergency recall cue that is rarely used and always earns an exceptional reward. Practice it in controlled environments before relying on it.
