Few dog breeds are as misunderstood as the Rottweiler. Movies, sensational stories and ignorance have created a stubborn image that rarely matches reality. In this article we set the record straight on five of the most common myths.
Myth 1: Rottweilers are naturally aggressive. The truth is that a well-bred and well-socialised Rottweiler is known for its calm, balanced character. Aggression almost always stems from poor upbringing, lack of socialisation or a combination of the two.
Myth 2: They're unsuitable as family dogs. On the contrary — Rottweilers are loyal, protective dogs that cherish their people. Properly raised, they get along very well with children and other pets.
Myth 3: A Rottweiler needs a dominant owner. Modern dog training is no longer about dominance but about consistency, trust and positive reinforcement. That works best for Rottweilers too.
Myth 4: They can't live with other dogs. With good socialisation from a young age, a Rottweiler can live perfectly fine with other dogs, even of the same sex.
Myth 5: A Rottweiler is 'suddenly' dangerous. Dogs always signal. A responsible owner learns to read those signals and intervenes early. An unexpected outburst is almost always the result of ignored warnings.
