Common Health Problems

Rottweilers are generally hardy, but the breed has a few known predispositions. Recognising early signs saves months of trouble.

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Skeletal malformation of the joints. Signs: stiffness after rest, bunny-hopping, reluctance to jump. Health-tested parents (HD/ED scores) drastically lower the risk.

Osteosarcoma (bone cancer)

Rottweilers are over-represented for this aggressive bone cancer, usually in the leg. Persistent lameness that doesn't respond to rest deserves an urgent vet visit and X-rays.

Cardiac conditions

Subaortic stenosis and dilated cardiomyopathy occur in the breed. Annual heart auscultation, and echo screening in breeding dogs, catches most issues early.

Gastric torsion (bloat)

A life-threatening twisting of the stomach in deep-chested breeds. Feed 2 smaller meals, avoid heavy exercise immediately after eating, and go to a 24/7 vet at the first sign of a bloated belly, unsuccessful retching or restlessness.

Eye and skin issues

Entropion, hot spots and allergies are seen occasionally. A weekly check of eyes, ears and skin catches most problems before they escalate.
